Common Place Book 8

Amulets and jewelry of the scarab beetle were given to mummies to be used in the after life to please the gods and help make it out of purgatory and be reborn.

The scarab beetle is a dung beetle, relying on dung balls for survival.

Ra, the sun god, was seen as responsible for rolling the sun across the sky, like dung across the plains, each day, and transforming bodies and souls. Dung beetles roll dung into a ball for food which also doubles for a brood chamber in which they lay eggs that are later transformed into larvae. This connection between Ra and Scarab allowed the beetle to be worshiped and seen as good luck charms and amulets for a better afterlife and rebirth.
