LIL 420 Revision Project

LIL 420 Revision Project

I have the original post for all of my blog post that I made while in WRT 304, reading and writing in the digital environment. I used these post as a backbone to my teaching background by writing book reviews, background information and how well I think they could be used in a high school classroom. Many of the books I read were new to me at the time and I believed some could be taught in a classroom setting, some probably would not fair as well.

For my revision of this project I am planning to create a sub section on my eportfolio that explores books in the United States that are controversial and are being banned in high school’s across the country. I am hoping to create scaffolding for a select group of novels such as To Kill a Mocking Bird, as books that have been banned in the past and are still under fire. I will also be exploring other novels that are being banned more recent years during my college years, 2019-2022.

The project would consist of a short review of the novel, as it is not the main focus of the project but I still find it necessary. Then lesson plans will be created for the select novels based off of the UNE lesson plan format that all education majors use. This would consist of most likely one to two lesson plans per novel and how I could teach difficult pieces of the text. I will also be creating a self-commentary on why these novels are so controversial and my thoughts on whether or not they should be banned or be taught in schools. This part of the project would be oriented towards parents and school boards to be able to appeal to why these books should be taught and how I would be able to defend the choice of teaching these novels in a classroom setting.

I chose this project because I believe that it will help me in the future as a high school english teacher that has to make these choices and need to understand the concerns of parents. I believe that this would prepare me for hard conversations with parents and how I could explain thoroughly the literary importance of teaching these controversial novels to children. To be able to steer away form the controversial issues of the stories and instead teaching the literary importance of the novels and why they deserve to be taught within a classroom setting.
