Standard 9
Reflection and Continuous Growth
The teacher is a reflective practitioner who uses evidence to continually evaluate his/her practice, particularly the effects of his/her choices and actions on others (students, families, and other professionals in the learning community), and adapts practice to meet the needs of each learner.
For this artifact I chose to include a slideshow about how trauma effects the brain and how this impacts learning and what we should do as teachers to help students with trauma learn. I think that this fits well into standard 9 because I was able to reflect on my own knowledge of trauma and how it plays a role in learning. This section has taught me so much on how students with trauma are unable to learn at times because of the stress that they have been through and how their mind can’t focus on schoolwork when they are focusing on how to stay alive.
This will help set up the foundation for my knowledge on trauma and how I can improve my grasp of trauma and how it effects our students. As an educator I will always have students with trauma within the classroom, so trying to understand what they have gone through and how this affects them in and out of the classroom is essential to making them better learners and people. I know that I will continue learning much more about trauma and its effect on children and adults alike. I see this slideshow as just a slimmer of what I will know once I get deep into my teaching career.
